This appears not to be the case with icloud. When I went to icloud to view what had been delted, the structure of files was confusing and it was hard to find files that I wanted. I got them back, but this happened twice and was very upsetting. Icloud has suddenly deleted major files on my desktop for no apparent reason, which were critically important to me. I have a mac with icloud backup and also with time machine backup.
